The way people find local businesses is changing fast. Search used to mean ten blue links and a map pack. In 2026, it increasingly means an AI-generated summary that answers the question before a customer ever clicks through to your site.
If you run a local business — a dental practice, a restaurant, a law firm, a home services company — this shift matters to you. Here’s what’s happening, and what to do about it.
What Is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google’s conversational, AI-generated search experience. Instead of returning a list of links, it synthesizes information from across the web into a direct answer at the top of the results page. AI Overviews (the summaries that appear above traditional results) and AI Mode (a fuller, chat-style interface) are the two main ways Google now serves this experience.
You may have also seen similar features in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Customers are increasingly starting their searches — including local searches — inside these AI tools rather than typing into Google at all.
Why This Matters for Local Businesses
Industry research consistently shows AI-generated answers now appear on a large share of local searches. According to Whitespark’s 2025 guide to AI Mode, AI Overviews surface on roughly two-thirds of local queries, and around half of US consumers report using conversational AI for local lookups.
Even if those exact percentages shift, the directional signal is clear: a meaningful slice of your future customers will discover you through an AI summary, not through a traditional ranking.
What’s Different About AI Search
Three mechanics make AI search behave differently from classic SEO:
1. Query fan-out. Instead of matching one keyword, AI Mode breaks a query into many sub-questions and synthesizes a single answer. Optimizing for a single phrase isn’t enough — your content needs to address the set of questions a customer might ask.
2. Conversational refinement. Users refine their prompts mid-search (“plumber near me” → “plumber near me that does emergency work on weekends”). Your content needs to support multi-turn refinement, not just one intent.
3. Citations over rankings. Being on page one of Google gives you roughly a 1-in-4 chance of being cited in an AI Overview, per Whitespark’s analysis. AI summaries pull from blogs, news sites, community forums, niche directories, and review platforms — not just the usual local aggregators. Editorial and contextual sources matter more than ever.
What Local Businesses Should Do Now
You don’t need to abandon traditional local SEO. NAP consistency, Google Business Profile optimization, reviews, and proximity still form the foundation. AI Mode sits on top of that foundation.
The additions worth making:
- Complete your Google Business Profile thoroughly — hours, services, pricing where possible, photos, and a populated FAQ section. AI Mode scrapes GBP heavily to build its summaries.
- Earn reviews with substance — review volume, recency, and the words customers use in reviews all feed AI-generated descriptions. Generic “great service” reviews carry less weight than detailed ones that mention specific services or qualities.
- Publish genuinely useful content on your site that answers the follow-up questions a customer might ask after their initial search.
- Build presence on editorial and community sources — local press, niche directories, industry publications, and active review platforms. These are the sources AI tends to cite.
- Watch for AI misinformation about your brand. AI can and does cite outdated or wrong information. If something incorrect is being said about your business in AI answers, that’s a real business problem worth fixing.
How RankStack Approaches This
At RankStack, we focus on the two surfaces that matter most for discoverability right now: getting businesses cited in AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI experiences, and ranking in traditional search. Both work together. Our work spans Google Business Profile optimization, review strategy, content built for query fan-out, and earning placement in the editorial sources AI pulls from.
AI Mode isn’t replacing local SEO. It’s adding a layer on top of it — and businesses that understand the layer now will be the ones customers find first.
