AI search and traditional SEO aren’t competing strategies — they layer together.
If you’re investing in SEO in 2026, you’ve probably noticed the goalposts moved. Showing up on Google isn’t enough — customers are also asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for recommendations. The brands that win discovery now are the ones that show up in both.
This guide breaks down what’s actually changed, what hasn’t, and how RankStack approaches the two as a single integrated strategy.
How AI Mode rewrote the discovery funnel
Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews now appear on a large share of searches. When someone asks “best plumber near me that does emergency calls,” they may never see a traditional ten-blue-links page — they see a synthesized answer with cited sources.
Two mechanics drive what gets cited:
- Query fan-out. Instead of matching one keyword, AI Mode breaks the question into multiple sub-queries (“emergency plumbers,” “24-hour plumbing,” “nearest open plumber”) and synthesizes an answer. Optimizing for one keyword is no longer enough — your content has to answer the set of related questions.
- Unstructured citation sources. AI Mode pulls heavily from editorial and community sites — blogs, news, niche directories, review sites — not just your Google Business Profile. Building presence on these contextual sources is now a ranking factor in its own right.
Why traditional SEO still matters
AI answers don’t replace every search. People still click through to websites for pricing pages, deep research, and transactional intent. Classic ranking signals — backlinks, on-page optimization, technical SEO, content depth — still drive the organic traffic that converts. AI visibility is an additional layer on top, not a replacement.
Our SEO services cover both: AI search visibility for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, and traditional rankings for organic search — designed to work together as one program.
What changed in the optimization playbook
The fundamentals still apply — your content needs to be the best answer to the questions your customers ask. What’s new is the surface area:
- Google Business Profile is the data backbone for AI. Hours, pricing, menus, photos, FAQs, and reviews all feed AI summaries. A complete, photo-rich GBP isn’t optional anymore.
- Reviews carry more weight. Review volume, recency, and the actual keywords in review text shape AI-generated descriptions and “What to know” panels.
- Multi-turn content. Users refine prompts conversationally (“…and one that’s open now”). Content has to support follow-up questions, not just one intent.
- Misinformation is a real risk. AI cites outdated or wrong sources. If your brand is misrepresented in AI answers, you lose customers and credibility.
